Had reality just ensued, morty would've obviously saved before setting the device aside and definitely had rick destroy the device once Jerry accidentally pushed the button, all without losing his happiness. The writers just hamfisted in a full on uncharactistic retard moment because derailing morty's enlightened, more responsible character was the only way they could force any measure of consequences on him to force a moral and prove rick "right" in the end. There's no reason morty wouldn't have saved the moment he decided to set aside the device, just to ensure his happiness wouldn't be reset.
The writers wrote themselves I to a corner.
